HARMONY RENAISSANCE SOLUTION FOR POLITICAL AND RELIGIOUS STRIFE

All religions teach Harmony. But institutionalized religions may not respect each other. Each religion claims they are the true messenger from God. That position can be very divisive. That is why we have religious crusades and religious strife. Buddhism is more accepting than other religions. The claim of most Christians that the human Jesus Christ is the son of God can only be accepted by others as symbolic and not scientific. The human body is physical; it is not part of the invisible energy field. Our soul is part of the invisible energy field. That makes us spiritual beings with a conscience. We do not need miracles to accept invisible energy; it is proven by science.

Ultimately, all religions must be united by harmony because harmony simply means unity in diversity. Confucius said, "Gentlemen prefer harmony over conformity, petty people prefer conformity over harmony." "In all ceremony, harmony is most precious". Confucius meant that all religions must prefer harmony. Harmony faith can accept Harmony Renaissance and scientific invisible energy without a man-made image of God. That puts harmony as the unifying force.

Harmony believers can accept other religions for their contributions to human civilization. Ultimately, Harmony Renaissance will be the most sublime, most relevant and beneficial to human civilization. That explains why China does not have home-grown religion but accepts all religions. Confucius said, "Respect the supernatural but keep a distance." (Confucius' teachings are not a religion, but a philosophy with no deity.) China's long continuous history has relied on her ancient harmony teaching. Socialism with Chinese characteristics is Socialism with Harmony. China does not have home-grown ideology either; Marxism was imported from Germany. China has worked well under its harmony philosophy, the essence of Chinese ancient culture.

Eventually, ideology will become less relevant in a harmonious world. Capitalism and communism all end in "-ism". All ideology words that end in -ism "is small" and not universal compared to harmony. The world is much more in harmony without ideological struggles. All Chinese learned that from the past. The world will progress best when we respect and learn from each other's cultures.

III) Harmony, China’s ancient cultural essence and soft power

III) Harmony, China’s ancient cultural essence and soft power
From the perspective of harmony, human civilization is the progress in resolving relationship conflicts between:1) Human and nature (birth of religions, etc.)2) Human and human (philosophic, religious, and moral teachings)3) Members of a group (family, tribes’ and nomads’ morals, and codes and standards)4) Citizens and society at large (philosophy, values teaching, and imposition of laws)5) Rulers and the ruled (hierarchical social structure, elite values and government propaganda, democracy development, freedom and responsibility)6) Clashes between religions (such as the current clash between Muslim and western religious beliefs)7) Ideology contests (socialism vs. capitalism, democracy vs. broader harmony)8) Dependence and Independence development between national blocks (developed, underdeveloped, developing, poor and rich)Above is a list indicating, by way of illustration, only some of the major outstanding issues in conflict resolution and achieving harmony. In the interest of leading toward a current universal harmony exposition in the following, only major world harmony development movements will be summarized. These are also past global harmony movements that have by far the major repercussions on human civilization. The three major harmony movements of human civilization as listed in above conflict resolutions are religion, democracy, and harmony. Today’s world is in great disharmony, with religion conflicts, international inequity, and the disparity between North and South. To lead us out of this convulsion, we must look beyond religion and democracy to harmony as the basis of equality, mutual respect, tolerance, and acceptance. Harmony as the universal value envelops democracy; but, as a basic human longing, it is not institutionalized. The spread of harmony has been uniquely peaceful compared to religion and democracy. Will harmony bring a more moderate future world? American democracy faces the challenge of Chinese harmony as the leading global philosophy in the 21st century. Teaching harmony in the U.S. is paramount. For more details, please see China’s Harmony Renaissance: What the world must know by Francis C W Fung, published by World Harmony Organization.

VII) World Harmony: is it achievable? What promises lie ahead?

VII) World Harmony: is it achievable? What promises lie ahead?
World Harmony is achievable because the cycle of self-destruction and deception is reversing. We can see it coming. The world is heading towards mutual win–win development. We are beginning to be aware that world development is not a zero-sum game. World Harmony can be simply defined as a multilateral world set on the course of win–win development. This will release the energy for mankind to work for common prosperity.
Harmony as a guiding faith is very broad. It includes peace within oneself, in relations between people, within family, between citizens and nations, harmony among nations, and between man and nature. Democracy is nothing but harmony between citizen and their government. Environmental ecology is simply harmony of man with nature. The practice of harmony can be simply defined as the following twelve virtues: Tolerance, Acceptance, Respect, Equality, Gentleness, Forgiveness, Patience, Humility, Conservation, Ecology, Unity with Nature, and Unity of Mankind. With these practices firmly in mind, World Harmony is on the way to be achievable.
What promises lie in the future? In the future, we will see further growth of developing countries and multilateralism. This will lead to a more harmonious balance of East and West, North and South dialogues and cultural exchange. The world is poised for win–win mutual development. World development is not a zero sum game as some might think. The best way to develop is openness and learning from the best of each culture so as to move towards common prosperity.
The big media houses and others have come together because of new challenges from the marching of the developing world and changes of technology and market orientation. Powerful world media, working for more harmonious reporting, is a major breakthrough for the cause of World Harmony. The Western powers have dominated the world stage and news reporting for the last two centuries. By conceding to cooperation and win–win development in world news reporting, the stage is set for inevitable improvement of East West and North South relations. This is the important single step the world must take to avoid self-destruction and deception. We are seeing the coming of a brave new world. We are very hopeful that world harmony undertakings will flourish.
Harmony is universal. It embraces all human relations and our relation with the universe. Harmony is the underlying operating principle of the universe. Without harmony mankind will self-destruct and the universe will not be eternal. "Harmony Renaissance will release us from the bondage of human strife. It is the next wave of creative energy that mankind is waiting for. Harmony Renaissance will bring East and West convergence so mankind will reach higher accomplishments beyond European Renaissance."In Service of Harmony RenaissanceFrancis C W Fung, Ph.D.Director GeneralWorld Harmony Organization.

VI) The world will benefit from China’s harmony renaissance. Harmony is a universal common value

VI) The world will benefit from China’s harmony renaissance.
Harmony is a universal common valueLet us examine the World Media Summit held in Beijing Oct 8 to 10, 2009. This is a significant step towards a more harmonious world by bringing all the world media together for the first time of modern history. Some called it the Olympics of Media. 170 world media and over 300 delegates attended. These included the eight biggest world media house presidents, CEO’s from Xinhua, AP, Reuters, Time Warner, BBC, Newsgroup, Tass News, Japanese United Press, and Google. The concluding joint statement emphasized increased win–win cooperation in expanding world multicultural reporting and also specifically called for more diverse, accurate, fair, and impartial reporting. The World Media Summit was hosted by Xinhua News and sponsored by the big eight media. This is Harmony Renaissance as advocated by China. The Summit and the joint statement historically herald the beginning of a more harmonious world. We at World Harmony Organization (WHO) work for Harmony Renaissance to bring back harmony, a universal value. Harmony is being neglected because world is driven by racial, religious, and ideological strife. Harmony Renaissance is needed as the ultimate resolution to unshackle us and to reverse the tide of human self-destruction and environmental degradation. Harmony with mankind and with nature is necessary for our sustainable development and survival. 6

V) China’s cultural renaissance must include harmony renaissance

V) China’s cultural renaissance must include harmony renaissance
Throughout China’s long history as an ancient culture, unlike the Middle East, it did not produce a religion of world importance, and unlike the West, it did not produce a comprehensive homegrown democracy system to resolve conflicts between the ruler and the ruled. China obviously, however, had notions of religion and democracy when Confucius admonished his followers to respect God but keep a distance, and Mencius advocated good government and put citizens above the rulers. Instead, through considerable debate and evolution, China settled on the Confucius philosophies of ZHONG YONG, HE XIE (moderation, harmony) and hierarchy social structures. Family and social order were promoted by emphasizing SAN GANG WU CHANG, REN, YI , LI , ZHI, XIN (the three important relations in the order of: ruler and the ruled, father and children, husband and wife and five basic societal moral values) and LUN LI DAO DE (family and moral values) 5
This system of profuse teaching was drilled into students from Day One and all through a scholar’s life. Youngsters’ first standard reading text was SAN ZI JING (a simple rhyme of Confucius teaching). This simple moral text is to be recited by students word for word (my children still cut their teeth on Chinese characters, and Chinese words with this text during the 1990’s in Taiwan). The moderation and harmony philosophy reinforced by morals and values as a social system was very different from the Western democracy concepts of citizen rights and duties enforced by law and order.Ancient China did practice laws, but only sparsely when compared to the comprehensive European laws and the complex and voluminous US case study system. The strength of US modern culture lies in the implementation of government and law practices (the so-called “rule of law”), and not merely in its democratic ideology. The ideal of democracy, as harmony between government, society, and citizens, is universally accepted by today’s world. It will take time for the developing countries to grow their own appropriate democratic systems in their own soil. Harmony, as seen from ancient Chinese philosophy, included the practices of acceptance, tolerance, mutual respect, equality, and patience, but not the use of heavy penal correction. Harmony thus is the essence of Chinese ancient culture. Thus, the Chinese Cultural Renaissance must include Harmony Renaissance.

IV) China's harmony Renaissance, can world ignore it?

IV) China’s harmony renaissance, can world ignore it?
Democracy grew out of the 17th century Enlightenment movement as a resolution of the conflicts between the ruler and the ruled. But, the movement as a tradition had inspired many national revolutions. The notable ones for this discussion were the French revolution, American independence war, and the Chinese 1911 revolution extending to the 1949 revolution led by Mao Zedong. However, three hundred years is very short for human history. Throughout Chinese history, every 300 years or so peasants would rise up to overthrow the emperor. However, the ancient philosophies of harmony and moderation were always able to restore stability, prosperity, and a loosely united empire. Even after foreign Mongolian and Manchu invasions, stability was restored with the invaders being converted by Chinese culture. The resilience of the Chinese nation lies in its deep-rooted harmony philosophies coupled with prosperity at the beginning of each successful dynasty. This typically goes on in every 300 years or so for two millennium. Then China, after two hundred years of Western and Japanese humiliation and invasion, had lost its direction for a while. Today, with relative prosperity returning, demands for harmony as a way to resolve conflicts in a complex modern society are returning in force. This is how China has rediscovered itself from the roots of its ancient culture. This may prove to be like the European renaissance after the Dark Ages in rediscovering the ancient Greek culture.
Democracy as a movement for the most part is universally accepted in the world today. One needs only to look at how many new countries or changing countries are calling themselves democracies. However, the US has its own definition. This mostly means that countries agreeing with the US are democracies. Democracy as a system of government needs to take hold and grow in the fertile soil of developing countries and countries evolving from their old cultures. This ideal of anti-corruption and anti-dictatorship is changing traditional order by reform. Harmony advises renunciation of force. In time, democracy will grow and produce its fruits in the global modern environment. In the 1980’s, the Soviet planned economy dissolved due mostly to its own non-competitiveness with the Western market economy. In cold war rhetoric, it was called “US capitalism triumphs over communism”. Communism thus had a bad name. But, the bad connotation mainly comes from the cold war mentality that “communism means enslavement”. It is not the intent of the present paper on harmony to take sides. It is important to point out for those who did not grew up during the cold war era that the US media divided the world into the free world and the communist world. Today so-called Communist countries can be very capitalistic and materially very successful. The dividing line is very blurred today.
Due to the rapid expansion of economic and industrial activities in China during the last twenty some years, China has developed from an egalitarian society to a society of unbalanced wealth distribution and from a self-sufficient society to one that depends heavily on energy and outside material resources like all developed nations. The Scientific Development Concept was thus conceived by the Chinese leaders to provide a blueprint for a long-term sustainable development. In time, this blueprint has expanded to include old and new conflict resolution in China’s grand modernization. Harmony being China’s dominant philosophy for 2500 years, it is no surprise, despite the onslaught of Western culture for the last two hundred years, that China rediscovered its ancient heritage. This is not unlike the return of harmony philosophy to the golden Han dynasty after the Spring and Autumn Warring States period. There were thousands of battles 4fought between feudal states at the time, but finally peace and stability was restored through the institution of Confucius’ teaching.
In the fertile soil of the Chinese harmony garden after Chinese leaders called for Harmony Society development, ideas of harmony spread like spring bamboo shoots after the rain. Creative ideas of Harmony Society from government officials, intellectuals, think tanks, academicians, and the general public are currently sweeping through the country. We may once again witness a major new harmony movement excelling the ancient teachings of ancient harmony that has guided China for the last 2500 years. A true period of “let a hundred flowers bloom and a hundred schools contend” may be in the making, surpassing the Spring and Autumn period debates in scope and magnitude. If this social harmony movement takes hold, the Chinese culture may take a leap into the future World of Harmony.
Today’s China is in disharmony. The current modernizing and opening and reform have created a degree of regional prosperity. But, with the impact of materialism and lower moral values there are conflicts due to disparity of wealth and privilege and to difference of the new and the old. In the traumatic changes that are required for modernizing, there is extreme thinking in China that forgets the old teachings. Today there are Chinese who feel lost and passively admit cultural inadequacy, under the incessant criticism by U.S. media. Fortunately, the current government, to deal with the multitude of contradictions, came up with the Concept of Scientific Development for modernization. This Concept of Scientific development is widely discussed and covered by the media. However, the major stroke of luck is that this scientific development concept brought China back in touch with the forefathers’ teaching of harmony. Harmony as a way of life is deeply founded in Chinese family unity and is the essence of Chinese ancient teaching. On the current path, China will transition through the current adjustment and reach a modern society with Chinese characteristics. This may very well be a socialistic society with harmony. Its development remains to be seen. In the process, China’s harmony development can only bring harmony to the rest of the world. The ultimate patience of harmony will work its way by resonance. The often-used phrase “Socialist Society with Chinese Characteristics” is ultimately the Socialist Society with Chinese Harmony.

II) How does China’s current soft power stacks up against world religion, Western democracy, and other soft power?

II) How does China’s current soft power stacks up against world religion, Western democracy, and other soft power?China is currently in no position to challenge Eastern religion or Western democracy and other world dominant soft power in cultural influences. However, all things will come in due course. In terms of soft power development, 60 years is a relative short time historically for new China. Instead of accepting the simple rationale of “politically incorrect” in a Western dominated media, let us examine the relevant developments revealing why China’s world influence is not in keeping with its size, population, long historical continuity, and its current economic rise. The major reasons for China’s recent lack of progress in soft power are: Western influence is at its high, particularly coming after America’s post World War II and cold war economic and ideology triumph; although China has disentangled herself from the cold war ideological struggle, she nevertheless suffered setbacks in relation to American successes; due to years of humiliation by Western powers as a semi-colonial state, China has yet to regain confidence; and through her own growing pains of experimentation, she has lost confidence in not coming to grips with her long continuous history. Finally, in her eagerness to learn from the West, she has not given enough emphasis to the importance of her own cultural heritage and innovativeness. All these and other historical factors have hindered China in rightfully regaining her world influence, despite her rise in economic power.

I) Current financial crisis and China economic miracle: Does modern China have soft power?By all accounts, China is leading the world out of the current global financial crisis. According to China Daily, Oct 18, 2009, a professor of Economics and Head of the School of Contemporary Chinese Studies at the University of Nottingham in the UK wrote in part: “As celebrations of its achievements over the past 60 years subside, China can look forward to its next milestone: surpassing Japan as the world's second largest economy before the year is out. Another target reached ahead of schedule – and further evidence that China is emerging from the financial crisis as the big winner.“Based on past records, and taking into account China's expected growth rate over the next two decades, China will overtake the United States to become the largest economy in the world within five years measured in purchasing power parity-terms, and within 20 years measured in nominal terms. It could be even sooner. These predictions are based on the assumption that the US economy will grow 3 percent per year and the Chinese economy 9 percent per year, assuming constant nominal exchange and inflation rates for both countries.“But if the yuan continues to appreciate against the dollar as it has done in the past decade, and/or if China's domestic inflation rate is higher than that of the US, China will gain ground even quicker.”China’s rise in economics apparently is not accompanied by the same measure of soft power rise in world influence. There is no lack of Western media and think tank reports on the subject. The overwhelming Western verdict is that China’s political and cultural influence as a world power on the world stage will be a long time coming. Although the lack of deserving recognition for China’s soft power is due to complex historical reasons, the simple verdict given has been that China does not have the “politically correct” ideology by Western standards. Will this prognosis persist? Most likely not, should one look back to the history of ancient China’s cultural influence.

From the perspective of harmony, human civilization is the progress in resolving relationship conflicts between:1) Human and nature (birth of religions, etc.)2) Human and human (philosophic, religious, and moral teachings)3) Members of a group (family, tribes’ and nomads’ morals, and codes and standards)4) Citizens and society at large (philosophy, values teaching, and imposition of laws)5) Rulers and the ruled (hierarchical social structure, elite values and government propaganda, democracy development, freedom and responsibility)6) Clashes between religions (such as the current clash between Muslim and western religious beliefs)7) Ideology contests (socialism vs. capitalism, democracy vs. broader harmony)8) Dependence and Independence development between national blocks (developed, underdeveloped, developing, poor and rich)

Above is a list indicating, by way of illustration, only some of the major outstanding issues in conflict resolution and achieving harmony.

IV) China’s harmony renaissance, can the world ignore it?

VII) World Harmony: is it achievable?
What promises lie ahead?World Harmony is achievable because the cycle of self-destruction and deception is reversing.

Harmony Renaissance will bring East and West convergence so mankind will reach higher accomplishments beyond European Renaissance."

IMPORTANT MESSWAGE TO DIRECTORS AND FRIENDS OF WORLD HARMONY ORGANIZATION

Important message to Directors and friends of World Harmony Organization

Dear Directors and Friends,

Now that we are growing with new support of friends, we must remember that WHO is a non-political and non-religious public benefit Code 501 (3) think tank. We advocate Harmony Renaissance as a universal common value to resolve religious and ideological strife, but we respect all major religions and world cultures. A multilateral world must be inclusive of all world cultures. Mankind progresses together best when we humbly learn from each other. Harmony belongs to the world. Harmony Renaissance is the renaissance of world civilization and our shared common value.

In our over 200 worldwide published essays, we advocate harmony within oneself, with nature, in our society, and among nations. Please refer to our essays by clicking the link www.scribd.com/fcwfung We are practitioners of harmony in the examples we set and in our writing. We believe harmony propagates best, not by preaching, but by resonance, nature's preferred way of propagation. We accept all religions, but Harmony Renaissance does not invoke man-made physical images of a creator or messenger. We believe Harmony is the fundamental order of the universe. Harmony belief is necessary and self-sufficient and in unity with science.

We advocate Harmony Renaissance, but we must rise above religion and ideological confrontation. All religions teach harmony. All cultures contain harmony teaching as a balanced way of life. Harmony is not passive. It is a scientific Dynamic Balance of extremes. We believe in world harmony, world democracy, unity of mankind, unity of cultures, harmony diplomacy, and harmony consensus -- in short, Unity in Diversity.

We believe in equality of mankind among all nations. There are new and old cultures, but no bad culture. We must guard against judging other culture as inferior. In time, all nations will modernize and harmonize their own old and new culture within -- and without outside interference. In fact all cultures must continuously develop to keep up with world harmony. Only by accepting and respecting diverse world cultures can we reach our common destiny, a harmonious multilateral world.

THE NEW WORLD ORDER AND HARMONY RENAISSANCE

THE NEW WORLD ORDER AND HARMONY RENAISSANCE
The unprecedented comprehensive joint statement shows the success of Obama’s harmony diplomacy in China. America needs China to continue to fund the U.S. deficit. China needs the U.S. to support her effort to unify the nation, including Tibet and Xinjiang. In the past, America, in the name of human rights, has interfered in what China considered as internal affairs by supporting the Dalai Lama and the Xinjiang separatist movement. On both counts, the Chinese citizens are overwhelmingly behind their government. Thus, America’s double standard of treating Al-Qaida as a terrorist movement and Tibet and Xinjiang as a human rights issue will not be credible in the long run. Thus, too, the continuing human rights dialogue is instrumental and essential in bridging the cultural and core interest gap between the two world powers.
America’s founding values are freedom and democracy, both inherited from European Renaissance. The rise of China has necessitated the U.S. media to practice self-censorship to protect the status quo. In so doing, it stumbles to slow harmony philosophy from growing in America. Harmony is an ancient cultural common value of the world. The twelve virtues of harmony are TOLERANCE, ACCEPTANCE, RESPECT, KINDNESS, FORGIVENESS, HUMILITY, GENTLENESS, PATIENCE, EQUITY, NONVIOLENCE, GREEN ECOLOGY, AND CONSERVATION. The last two being actions we now must collectively take urgently to harmonize with nature in order to avoid catastrophe on earth.
In today’s multilateral world, a Harmony Renaissance is inevitable. Harmony Renaissance is the renaissance of world civilization. Harmony Renaissance will unshackle us from racial, ideological, and religious strife. As a young dynamic country, America should act more like a responsible power to advocate Harmony Renaissance. Harmony Renaissance is the next wave of creative energy that will lead humankind to the next level of accomplishment beyond the European Renaissance.
In an interview with Charley Rose on November 17, 2009, Dr. Henry Kissinger, who was instrumental in normalizing U.S. – China relations, expounded on the coming of a new world order. He declared that world order means America and China must work in consensus, harmony consensus. Harmony Renaissance will herald that brave new world of peace and prosperity. To build a new world order, it is paramount that U.S. lead in harmony diplomacy.

JOINT STATEMENT ISSUED BY OBAMA AND HU JINTAO

JOINT STATEMENT ISSUED BY OBAMA AND HU JINTAO
According to an Associated Press Novemebr 18, 2009 report:
At a state banquet Tuesday night, the People's Liberation Army band serenaded Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and much of the Chinese leadership with American songs including ‘I just Called to Say I Love You’, ‘We are the World’ and ‘In the Mood’."
The joint statement that Obama and Hu issued was the broadest of its kind in 30 years of formal relations. It contained expressions of cooperation in relations between their two often-mistrustful militaries, on a human rights dialogue, on space exploration, and on shoring up Afghanistan and Pakistan — as well as the big topics of climate change, economic recovery, and defanging North Korea's and Iran's nuclear programs.
"It's wonderful to have the President Obama here," Lu Hualin, a middle-aged office administrator in Beijing's business district, said Tuesday. "I didn't watch the town hall, but it's pretty obvious that the Chinese really like him for the energy, intellect and charisma he brings to the conversation. I think we'll welcome anyone who has an agenda to better the world and work toward world peace."
Hu said each country should respect the other's "core interests" — code for Washington to end arms sales for Taiwan and support for the Dalai Lama's Tibetan exiled government. The Xinhua News Agency later quoted Hu as saying Washington should also ban advocates for Muslim ethnic Uighurs in Xinjiang, the western China region where anti-Chinese rioting flared anew this summer.

PRESIDENT OBAMA’S MEETING IN CHINA, HARMONY DIPLOMACY IN ACTION.

President Obama is a man of vision. He is a rare U.S. president with a diverse ethnic background, who has respect for Asian culture. Besides his own experience in South East Asia, it has recently come to the public that his half brother and sister are both successfully married to Chinese spouses. His speech and fielding of Chinese youths’ questions showed respect and humility for his Chinese host. I am also a great admirer of Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premeir Wen Jiabao for their humility and dedication to serve the Chinese nation and for their advocacy for world harmony. I have confidence that, together, these three dedicated public servants of America and China will steer a promising course to a U.S. – China strategic partnership for a harmonious future.

To quote the November 16, 2009 Xinhua News, President Obama set an example for Harmony Diplomacy in action:
Visiting U.S. President Barack Obama said Monday that different countries should learn from each other to diversify cultures in the world.
"Each country in this interconnecting world has its own culture, its own history, and its own traditions," Obama said during a dialogue with Chinese students in the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum.
"It is very important for the United States not to assume what is good for us is automatically good for somebody else," he said when responding to a question raised by a Shanghai college student about how to promote cultural exchanges between different countries.
Obama said one of the U.S. strengths is the country has a very diverse culture, and has people coming from all around the world. "There is no one definition of what America looks like," he added.
He cited his family as an example of diverse cultures, saying the family is like "the United Nations" as his father was from Kenya, his mother from Kansas of the U.S. Midwest, while his sister was a half-Indonesian married to "a Chinese person from Canada.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AMERICAN AND CHINESE OPENNESS

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AMERICAN AND CHINESE OPENNESS

francis@worldharmonyorg.net
Chinese students of her long history understand that the rise of Han and T’ang dynasties came about because of extensive cultural interaction with the world through flourishing commerce via the silk route that reached to Europe. They also understand the set backs of a self-imposed closed society during the later Ching dynasty (1600s – 1900s) because of the complacent and arrogant attitude that China had nothing to learn from the outside world. For over three hundred years since 1700, China suffered bitterly for not opening enough to the outside. However, the more recent Western-imposed containment during the early years of the founding of the People’s Republic of China was not entirely the fault of the Chinese government. (Mao Zedong was eager to normalize U.S.–China relations by launching "ping-pong diplomacy"). Thank goodness, that is all in the past and China has forged ahead with her reform and opening up initiated by Deng Xiaoping. The last three decades of China’s success amply testify to her willingness to learn from the outside. There is no turning back.

In my honest opinion and observation for today, America has a confident and open domestic society. But China is more open to the outside, because the nation as a whole is more willing to learn from the outside. Mere openness to outside news, without the humility to learn, can result in self-censorship and block acceptance of news about outside culture and success. This failing has happened to all declining powers in the past.

China’s willingness to learn from the outside during the last three decades is exemplary for a country of her size. Throughout PBS news' spontaneous interviews of persons on the street during Obama’s Beijing visit, all knew Obama by name. A simple game of statistics by interviewing residents of major U.S. and China cities would no doubt show that more Chinese know Obama by name than Americans know Hu Jintao by name. There is a general lack of respect and arrogance of the American public towards Chinese culture. This attitude is nurtured by the U.S. media’s chronic criticism of the Chinese government. This trend will continue unless the U.S. as a nation demands the implementation of fair, accurate, and more diverse cultural reporting by the U.S. media, as signed onto by all major media in the World Media Summit Declaration, Oct. 2009.

Interestingly enough, a similar contrast can be observed in the history of East and West cultures. Traditionally, the Chinese agrarian society exhibited a tightly controlled family and imperial structure, with a stern head of the household and emperor. The order of the society was Confucian with strict moral discipline within. However, the Chinese empire was never very expansionistic and was satisfied with a tributary system, rather than imposing its values on its neighbors. On the other hand, Western power was typically expansionistic and colonized the conquered territories. At the same time, Western culture traditionally valued democracy and practiced a loose family order. This is in keeping with American’s wish to police the world; yet the society within is very liberal. This cultural gap between East and West will take continuing dialogue to bridge and is the main reason for America’s critical view of China's domestic policy. The world order today is not very democratic internationally. A new world order is needed for our multilateral, multicultural world.

With the current trend continuing, China will become more liberal and will improve its domestic openness, including the internet for domestic consumption. By all indications, China will grow more confident about her internal security as the government implements its “Concept of Scientific Development” and the country becomes more prosperous and its society more harmonious. This will take time. China will also remain internationally more outward-looking to learn from the outside than America is. For China, this is by necessity, as well as by national determination, for a long time to come.

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE OPEN TO THE WORLD

As a student interested in U.S. China relations since my days at Brown University after I emigrated from Shanghai, I cannot claim I am an expert comparable to James Fallows’ depth of experience. But as a bicultural person living in America for over 50 years and raising three multicultural children, the PBS news story about Obama’s visit to China reminded me two pieces of Chinese wisdom. Laotze advised: the more powerful, the more one needs humility. And, Confucius once said that insensitive lecturing is more a sin than a virtue. Obama is in a position to advise China about openness. China, as a nation, judging by the success of three decades of reform and opening up, fully appreciates that a progressive nation must be open to the outside. Most of all, openness needs to be followed by humility and the will to learn. The rise of China as a nation fully demonstrates the Chinese people’s willingness to learn from the outside. Nevertheless, we must guard against free public advice, less we trample on others’ dignity.
As a young country, America is well endowed in resources and financial successes. We are lucky to have attracted so many foreign talents who contributed to building a prosperous society. But, are we willing to learn from these foreign cultures or their success experiences, instead of making excuses? Especially from Eastern cultures that may hold a drastically different philosophy and pursue different development paths? What happens if a reverse “brain drain” takes place when our economy is in relative decline during a financial crisis? (For example, see the November 17, 2009 Time magazine article “Obama's Half Brother Mark Obama Ndesandjo Speaks Up in China.”)

This essay is a humble response to PBS’s NewsHour with Jim Lehrer broadcast (November 16, 2009) following President Obama’s town hall meeting in Shanghai. In answering Lehrer’s question “Will China be a partner or an enemy to America?”, James Fallows, the seasoned journalist, replied “Probably neither.” All indications point to China becoming “both an important partner … and a contender in various ways.” Fallows is the distinguished editor in chief of the Atlantic Monthly and a personal friend. With due respect and not to steal his thunder, I wish to expound further.

Jim Lehrer’s repeated question to his media panel was “Will China become a partner or an enemy to America?” This question is riddled with a Cold War overtone and is not at all appropriate and beneficial to Obama’s practice of harmony intentions. China consistently insists on the principle of non-interference in other countries’ domestic affairs. She has practiced her professed independent foreign policy since her founding and has no intention to become America’s enemy. In support of building a better consensus for coming cooperation between the greatest developed world power and the developing world power, I suggest the timely practice reflected by the title “Harmony Diplomacy: be more a responsible world power, neither an enemy, nor a partner, nor a judge”

HARMONY FAITH, ORDER OF THE UNIVERSE
INTRODUCTION

The major religions of the world as we know today all originated in Greater Asia which includes the Middle East and South Asia. This is no coincidence, as all monotheistic religions believe in the same God, Allah, Creator, Heaven or what other names we use. What makes religions different is cultural heritage. Each major religion’s man made image of God is thus inherently different. This fixation on the difference of each culture’s institutionalized and man made image of God is unnecessary and divisive. There can only be one creator for all mankind regardless of what name is used or what religion one believes in. Thus in time, all religions must converge into one faith by transcending each religion’s cultural fixations and universally accepting one creator without a man made image. This is the inevitable progressive development.

The eminent contemporary Ying Yang master Ma Shuhai, in his book “Tong Dao”, classified the continuous development of human religions into four progressive stages. The following description bears significant additional explanation by the present author.

The stage of primitive idols worship: This was the pure irrational superstition stage. When man was very much in awe of subject to nature’s destructive powers such as fire water and wind. The stage of trust in one communicative God: Monotheistic faiths that evolve around one all mighty and powerful creators that man could develop a relation with and turn to for help. These types of institutionalized faiths with a specific creator with man- made image include most of the major religion s of today. Today mankind as a whole is suffering from the divisive forces of this culturally specific monotheism. The exception being Buddhism, which teaches believers to find inner peace and Buddha within oneself without the monotheistic creator. Chinese accept Dao as the force of universe creation which is distinct from the Judah-Christian tradition.

The rational stage of scientific religion: When man believes in his rational power. In this stage man can turn to science to explain all aspects of life except the meaning of life. This ushered in the modern Bahai Faith, which upholds progressive revelation from God. Bahai faith as a modern religion also emphasizes unity of religion and science. These two important concepts possibly herald in the era of less dependency on one Monotheistic creator in a man- made image. .The final stage is Harmony Faith, Order of the Universe: This is the life study of a final and decisive faith that has confidence in the modern discovery of the all prevalent and infinite invisible dark energy of the universe. We are currently at the very beginning of this life study. To become a universal faith it must do without a man-made creator image. We can also call this the relative rational inductive stage.HARMONY FAITH, ORDER OF THE UNIVERSE

In the following concise dissertation we will explain how this natural faith can reconcile science and religion once and for all. On top of that we will give the meaning of life a very achievable goal. In this stage the door is also open for continuing human progressive inspiration from the omnipresent and all prevalent Dao, the invisible dark energy that created the universe. Together with modern science this concept makes a creator with man made image unnecessary.Harmony is a universal common value; it is also a vision statement for all. It is the order of nature and the universe for all to emulate. Harmony is the dynamic balance that returns nature’s calamities to tranquility. Without harmony the universe cannot be eternal. In harmony we can find true belief that transcends all cultures and religions. The meaning of life is to seek harmony within our inner self.

Humans are born with a spiritual soul that develops to seek self fulfillment and self salvation. Our soul has a conscience that elevates us from total animal selfishness. As our soul grows to its maturity we must achieve our own harmony. A person at the end of his journey reconciles with his own soul to achieve harmony and peace of mind. The difference between a tormented soul and a soul in harmony at our death is the difference between hell and heaven. The invisible energy in the firmament created the universe and all creatures. This is our creator regardless of our religion and belief.

Our soul is an energy field that grows with our accomplishments on earth. With differing strengths embedded in our DNA Humans are not created equal just as sure our souls will not develop equally. Static equality is not what life is all about. Each soul attaining its own harmony with itself is the meaning of life. The achievement of harmony by nature and us is a dynamic process. The evolution of nature and life are dynamic processes and must not be considered as static phenomena. Harmony renaissance is a dynamic process and calls for proactive action. There is a fine line between a believer and non believer of any religion. A true creator will accept all because all humans attest to harmony. Cultural differences are only in form and not in essence. Harmony is the salvation of mankind and the king of unity in diversity.

The universe and all living creations through evolution are created by the invisible energy and are sustained by energy. This theory without man made heavenly images does not contradict conventional religious beliefs. Furthermore it is a rational way of agreeing with modern sciences. Our soul is merely an energy field that contains our spirit, life time beliefs and experiences. It exists eternally and has a beginning and no end after our death. Each soul can accomplish harmony with itself but souls are not necessarily equal. We are here on earth to develop our own soul from its early immature conception.Religions begin with search of truth, goodness and beauty. This search will ultimately help us to reach harmony at death.

All religions preach harmony because harmony is the most common value and the greatest common denominator of mankind. Conflicts in religion are caused by human corruption. Belief in harmony, the universal truth, does not need a man made image of creator. The invisible energy as the creator of the universe does not contradict with modern science. This imaging of the creator does not contradict any religious beliefs and is not divisive. In time this imaging of the creator without man made figure will reconcile all religions as the true scientific belief. According to modern science the invisible energy of the universe is all powerful and omnipresent. It is part of the paradigm of Faith in Harmony. Many religions believe in brotherhood of mankind. What has kept us from achieving unity in diversity are the differences in religious culture and the cultural centric creator figures conjured by different religions.

The ancient harmony cultural philosophy promulgated by Lao-tzu and Confucius did not rely on man made images of creators. As an ancient culture China did not create a religion of its own. Modern Chinese are more accepting of outside religions. This is witnessed by the lack of major religious wars in China despite the importation of many outside religions. Over two thousand years harmony philosophy modified Chinese major beliefs and outside religions to suit China’s cultural heritage. China’s ancient harmony philosophy fulfills her people’s need for self fulfillment and spiritual tranquility. This harmonizing process of various belief systems can be a model for the future world harmony.A person who does not practice institutionalized religion can achieve inner peace through harmony practices. The universal belief in the invisible energy as the creator in the firmament reconciles all religions and faiths. Faith in Harmony is thus the most acceptable Faith that transcends mankind’s conflicts of fear and greed. Harmony on earth that promises unity in diversity is the promise of Kingdom on Earth and the Most Great Peace on earth by all sages and prophets. A person achieves self fulfillment has reached harmony in his own soul and his life is complete and his soul is eternal and everlasting without torment.

We believe in harmony renaissance which is the pursuit of harmony as a way of life and a living faith. Harmony is a universal common value and renaissance is action. Harmony propagates by resonance, nature's preferred way of propagation. Faith in harmony gives hope of heaven on earth for all, regardless of any religion or creed. Faith in harmony as order of nature does not worship man made image of creators. For all mankind whether belonging to organized religion or not we can seek hope and brotherhood through soul searching harmony. Our search for harmony renaissance is multifaceted and all inclusive. Our perspectives include East and West culture, world civilization and history, harmony diplomacy, world religions, ancient philosophy and modern science. For harmony to be a true universal faith it must reconcile with scientific observations. We believe in self salvation through Faith in Harmony practices.

Our actions shall encompass all human activities such as world affairs, commerce, education, cultural activities and religious or non religious functions. Specifically at this moment in history our action should enhance peace, reduce conflict, harmonize world religions, and activate harmony culture, pursuit harmony education. United Nation is at a cross road. It is time to advocate U. N. harmony civilization so all 193 nations can converse and consult with universal Harmony common value. 21st century is the beginning of Harmony renaissance. The world mission is to be ready for human's second creative wave to lead us to the next higher level of common accomplishment. World Harmony will bring the whole world into action for a new millennium of peace and prosperity with unfettered collective energy surpassing European renaissance.

HARMONY RENAISSANCE SPEECH AT UNITED NATIONS

HARMONY RENAISSANCE SPEECH AT UNITED NATIONS
HARMONY RENAISSANCE SPEECH AT U. N.http://www.scribd.com/fcwfung

Honorary Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon, distinguished U N officials, ladies and gentlemen:

I, Francis C W Fung am honored to be here to represent World Harmony Organization (WHO). World Harmony Organization, pursues and also advocates Harmony Renaissance. Harmony is mankind’s highest common value and Renaissance is action. Together Harmony Renaissance has new life.I am here to share with you our Harmony Renaissance Preamble and Declaration. So without much ado here is our slide. I will talk around our Harmony Renaissance Preamble and Declaration, give you my explanations and answer questions at the end.

In the East, Harmony as a social science was evolved from natural science observation by Laozi. Human in harmony with the universe is called “Tian Ren He Yi.” Laozi left us with his 5000 words treatise Dao De Jing. It is the most translated Chinese book on way of life. The Chinese practice Fengsui which is a way to harmonize with nature and the environment. In the West, Einstein was also quoted as saying the order of nature is not accidental. In his words “Mother Nature” does not play dice. Harmony is the order of nature. Harmony belongs to the world and to the universe.

Harmony is the order of natural science and the fundamental law of the universe. Harmony is not passive. It advocates action and dynamic balance. Most people have the fallacy of thinking of harmony as static. We must think of harmony in terms of fluid dynamics, like the movement of air and water. It can be soft and it can be strong. It is in constant influx for sure. Harmony is dynamic energy balance and is also the principle of universe creation. Through harmony interaction the universe is created. Without harmony universe cannot be eternal.

From the very beginning, the universe is created by the infinite invisible energy in the firmament. The invisible energy that created the universe can also be called Dao. The word Dao in Chinese has two parts, one stands for head, the other for motion. Together they mean primal force that leads the way. Laozi said “Dao created one, one created two, two created three, three created all things. All things carry Yin and embrace Yang. Dynamic balance creates harmony”. Laozi’s harmony theory of universe is in unison with modern quantum physics.

If we have time I can go into more detail about Laozi’s theory of universe creation.Harmony Renaissance is the guiding principle to be applied to all natural and social sciences. Harmony governs all human relations from within us, between people, in the family, in the society, between citizens and government, among governments and among people in this global village. It can be applied to ecology, green energy inventions, and green energy developments for example. Harmony includes all the important virtues to make the world harmonious. These include among others, forgiveness, humility, equity, patience, tolerance and acceptance.

Harmony Renaissance is the break through that will take us to the next level of human creativity and accomplishment beyond European Renaissance. European Renaissance brought us democracy and modern science. Harmony Renaissance includes democracy, and it unshackles us from all bondages and baggage of human distrust. It resolves hostilities and reduces rich and poor disparity. Harmony Renaissance is the inevitable tide. It will allow nations on this global village really moving towards win-win mutual development. You can ask me questions on harmony renaissance, Harmony Faith. Harmony Faith is the 21st Century faith to prepare ourselves for self fulfillment and world harmony renaissance. The first global World Harmony City is our project proposal with Sungroup USA. It is a grand mission for the United Nations in green energy depository, inventions, solutions and demonstrations.
